Art Collectors
of Durham
Valerie & Joseph
Welcome to
the start of a series of articles about Art Collectors in Durham. The
creation of an art collection is a very personal form of self expression.
How collectors choose and exhibit the artworks in their collections will
be the focus of these articles. I would like to introduce you to a husband
and wife team of art collectors, Valerie and Joseph.
This couple
started collecting art in 1980 - 26 years ago. Joseph also paints in oils
for a hobby. They have a beautiful collection of paintings on their walls
that give them a lot of pleasure. They have said that getting to know
the artists has been a big part of the collection process. They like to
sit down and have tea and hear the stories artists have to tell about
the art making process, as well as their personal histories. They have
never bought art where they didn't get to know the artist.
Valerie and
Joseph go to all of the art festivals and art exhibitions that they can
get to, to see what artists have been creating and to look for new additions
for their collection. One thing they said about some art festivals is
that often it is very difficult to see the work properly because there
is too much work crowded into too small a space, and they especially find
it difficult to see art that is too far below eye level.
When choosing
paintings for their collections Valerie and Joseph look for paintings
that come to life, that are not too analytical and will "fly off the canvas."
Valerie was speaking about one of her favorite paintings when she said.
"I love that painting, it wouldn't matter how depressed I am, it would
make me happy. I get a warm feeling inside when I look at it."
Valerie and
Joseph have this advice for people who would like to start an art collection:
" Only buy works of art that you really love. Don't worry about how it
is valued by others."
It was a
real delight and honour for me to be invited into Valerie and Joseph's
home to see their art collection and to learn about the stories behind
each picture. I have learnt how personal an art collection can be, and
also how important it is to share the stories behind the pictures with
each other.
